Introduction to the China-Mozambique “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory on Smart Agriculture
Belt and Road Joint Laboratories are national-level science and technology innovation platforms established by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) by the national master plan. They are cooperatively built between qualified domestic higher education institutions, research institutes, enterprises, other innovation entities, and relevant institutions in “Belt and Road” partner countries. The China-Mozambique “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratory on Smart Agriculture, led by Zhejiang Normal University in collaboration with Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique) and Ningbo University of Technology, was approved for establishment by MOST in October 2024.
Addressing the strategic needs of both China and Mozambique concerning food security, and focusing on cutting-edge fields such as smart agriculture and intelligent disaster early warning, the Laboratory targets critical scientific challenges faced by Mozambique’s agricultural development. These include the frequent occurrence of tropical cyclones and associated secondary disasters, severe land degradation, food security issues, and the lag in disaster early-warning/prediction technologies and agricultural management information systems. The Laboratory conducts collaborative, frontier, innovative, and applied research in key areas including:i)Intelligent Monitoring and Early Warning of Agricultural Disasters; ii) Sustainable Utilization of Agricultural Water and Soil Resources; iii) Germplasm Innovation for Stress-Resistant and High-Yield Crops and Intelligent Cultivation; iv) Intelligent Perception and Diagnosis of Agricultural Information; and v) Smart Farmland Management and Equipment Innovation.
The Laboratory serves as a platform for training and exchange for relevant Mozambican technical personnel, provides a demonstration window for the application of Chinese smart agriculture and natural disaster early-warning technologies in Mozambique, and aims to become an international hub for scientific research and talent development with distinctive strengths in agricultural water-soil resources, natural disaster risk prevention, and related fields.
The Laboratory currently comprises 5 research centers and employs over 60 researchers, including 21 professors, 2 national-level distinguished experts, and 8 provincial/ministerial-level experts. It possesses over 8,000 square meters of dedicated research facilities, 2 field demonstration bases, and scientific instrumentation valued at over 40 million RMB.
